QUARRY OPERATION NOISE

MANY PEOPLE ARE AWARE OF A BERM'S PURPOSE AND THAT IS TO REDUCE OR ELIMINATE SOUNDS FROM THE AREA PAST THE BERM AND BELOW THE TOP OF THE BERM. BUT WHEN WE CONSIDER ANY NOISE FROM TRUCKS AND/OR LOADERS ETC. WORKING IN THE QUARRY, AND COMPARE THAT TO NOISES THAT ALL OF US IN SUBURBAN REAL ESTATE HAVE, SUCH AS COMMERCIAL SIZE LAWN MOWERS, AND GAS POWERED TRIMMERS AND GAS POWERED LEAF BLOWERS, AND ALL OPERATING AT THE SAME TIME. WELL, WHATEVER SOUNDS THAT INTERMITTANTLY ARE PRODUCED IN THE QUARRY ACTIVITIES, AND THESE CAN BE OBSERVED UP CLOSE EVEN NOW, WILL NOT COME CLOSE TO THE AFOREMENTIONED LANDSCAPING MAINTENANCE THAT ARE ALL OBSERVED BY MANY OF US. JUST RECENTLY I OBSERVED A CREW WITH TWO LAWN TRIMMERS AND A LEAF BLOWER AND ONE LAWN MOWER ALL OPERATING AT THE SAME TIME, WHERE ONE LANDSCAPER WAS SHOUTING AT HIS LOUDEST TO COMMUNICATE WITH ANOTHER EMPLOYEE. i DON'T THINK QUARRY ACYIVITIES ARE EVEN A FRACTION OF THE SOUND LEVELS OF LAWN MAINTENANCE. SO, LET'S JUST SCRATCH THAT OFF THE LIST OF GRIEVANCES.


QUARRY OPERATION VISIBILITY

MANY PEOPLE, OR IN FACT MOST PEOPLE, ARE AWARE THAT ANOTHER PURPOSE OF A BERM IS TO BLOCK VISIBILITY OF WHATEVER EXISTS ON THE OTHER SIDE. OF THE BERM. NOW IN THIS SITUATION, BRANTHAVEN HAVING CONSTRUCTED THIS BERM ALSO PLANTED SOME MATURE CLOSELY SPACED EVERGREEN TREES ON THE TOP OF THE BERM, WHICK BLOCKS AN ADDITIONAL 20 TO 30 FEET ABOVE THE BERM. HAVING WALKED THIS AREA BEHIND WESTHAVEN DRIVE HOMES, I ALSO ENCOUNTERED SOME STEEP WOODED RAVINES AND A SMALL CREEKWAY AND IT IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY THAT ANY PART OF THE QUARRY OPERATIONS, EAST OF KING ROAD, WILL BE SEEN FROM WESTHAVEN DRIVE HOMES. SO ON THE MATTER OF VISIBILITY, OF THE EXPANDED QUARRY OPERATIONS, FOR MOST PEOPLE FROM THEIR BACKYARDS OR GROUND FLOOR WINDOWS, THIS IS ALSO A NON-ISSUE.


TREE REMOVAL

THERE CAN BE NO DOUBT THAT TREES WILL BE REMOVED, BUT JUST HOW MANY ACRES IS THE QUESTION. NOW I HAVE NOT HAD ANY DISCUSSION WITH MERIDIAN BUT I BELIEVE ANY BUSINESS IN THIS ENDEAVOUR WOULD DO SOIL CORE TESTING TO DETERMINE THE DEPTH OF THE TOP SOIL, AND THE FURTHER DEPTH OF THE CLAY. THAT BEING SAID, ANY BUSINESS DECISIONS WILL BE TO NOT CLEAR ANY MORE TREES, OR ANY MORE TOP SOIL PAST THE LOCATION WHERE CLAY REMOVAL IS FINANCIALLY JUSTIFIED. THAT BEING SAID, THE DISTANCE FROM WESTHAVEN DRIVE PROPERTY LINE, WHICH YOU NOTED AS 35 METERS IS NOT LIKELY THE FINAL SEPERATION DISTANCE OF THE QUARRY ACTIVITIES.

WHEN I LOOKED AT GOOGLE MAPS, SATELLITE VIEW, I NOTICED THAT BURLINGTON HAS A HIGH DENSITY OF TREES, NOT JUST IN FORESTED AREAS, WHICH ARE MANY, BUT IN ALL RESIDENTIAL AREAS AS WELL.. IN FACT THIS AREA IN QUESTION IS LESS THAN 1% OF THE TREES WEST OF BRANT STREET FROM THE BAYSHORE UP TO DUNDAS STREET. THEN WHEN YOU CONSIDER THAT IT IS THE LEAVES THAT ABSORB CARBON DIOXIDE AND PRODUCE OXYGEN, AND THAT ON AVERAGE MOST TREES WILL INCREASE THEIR QUANTITY OF LEAVES BY 5% ON AVERAGE EVERY YEAR, THEN REMOVAL OF 1% IS NOT GOING TO BE A SIGNIFICANT MATTER ANYWAY.


HAZARDOUS DUST

YOU BEMOAN THE FACT THAT NO ONE HAS DONE A SERIOUS STUDY OF DUST LEVELS OR ANY ADVERSE EFFECTS OF SUCH CLAY DUST FROM QUARRY OPERATIONS. EVEN THOUGH THE QUARRY HAS BEEN OPERATING SINCE THE 70'S . IF THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT DUST ISSUE , WOULDN'T THE MERCEDES DEALERSHIP HAVE AVOIDED LOCATING THIS LUXURY VEHICLE DEALERSHIP ABSOLUTELY BUMPERED UP TO MERIDIANS OPERATIONS. FURTHER THE CUMIS FACILITY IS ALSO A LONG TERM NEIGHBOUR OF THIS FACILITY AND IF THERE WAS ANY MEDICAL EFFECTS CUMIS WOULD CERTAINLY BRING THIS FORWARD. IT JUST SEEMS TO ME THAT THIS CAMPAIGN IS GRASPING HYSTERICALLY FOR ANY EXAGGERATED SPECULATED POINT AND FEELING IGNORED THAT RESPONSIBLE AGENCIES DON'T SPEND THEIR RESOURCES ONLY TO PROVE THEY HAVE NO MERIT.
